 Green Steps
Green Steps Program is a concept that calls out companies adopting green practices in their product, policies and business tactics in and around the outdoor industry. More and more businesses (and consumers) are choosing to do business with environmentally responsible brands, and this is one way to find out who's doing what. The goal for this program is to encourage, step by step, the spread of ecologically sound best practices throughout our industry.

Some additional new steps for Outdoor Retailer include:

* Paper badges (recycled paper and soy ink) - no more petroleum based badges
* Recycled aisle carpet - reused at each Outdoor Retailer show
* Recycled booth carpet - offered to exhibitors in each service manual
* Biodegradable food ware - utensils, plates, napkins, cups, sandwich containers
* Renewable energy - We still support 100% wind energy for every show we produce
* Recycled trash programs - We recycle everything! All cardboard during exhibitor move-in as well as all trash from the show floor is recycled
* Promotion of Carbon Offset Program

Did You Know?

The Salt Palace lets nothing go to waste. All trash collected under the roof of the Salt Palace is taken to a transfer station and sorted. What this means: Every bag of trash is sorted for recyclables and only solid waste is sent to the dump. Recyclables include; plastic, cardboard, paper and aluminum. You can feel secure in knowing that your trash is being recycled simply by placing it in ANY trash can during the show. What needs special attention is the placement of all biodegradable items food containers and cutlery - into the proper containers so they can be taken to the local compost pile and turned into mulch and fertilizer for local growers.

Traveling to Salt Lake City?
Offset your carbon imprint with the OIA & Outdoor Retailer Carbon Neutral Travel Program!
Click on the button to offset your travel.

As an outdoor business you may already be taking steps that lessen your environmental impacts and reduce your energy and material needs, waste, and carbon emissions. Small steps by many across an entire industry are one way to see noticeable gains in reducing CO2 over the long run. OIA has extended the Carbon Neutral Traveler Challenge, which provides a way for businesses to take steps toward lowering their emissions.

Here’s how it works:

Travel to, from, and during Outdoor Retailer produces carbon emissions and other greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. Carbon offsets allow you to ensure that in the future, clean alternative wind energy is produced in lieu of carbon intensive coal fired energy. You are offsetting the carbon that you have already emitted, reducing future carbon emissions, and helping to grow the availability of clean energy by supporting new wind energy projects. If you purchase your offsets through Native Energy, you’re also supporting projects on Native American tribal lands that build strong regional economies.

Brooks introduces in July the first biodegradable midsole, BioMoGo, which in enclosed landfills biodegrades into reusable byproducts in about 20 years versus up to 1,000 for traditional EVA midsoles.

Brooks’ new shoe box and all of its inside stuffings, wrappings, and shoe stays are made from 100% recycled materials and feature only non-toxic soy-based inks.

Brooks’ proprietary HPR Green outsole—featured in its Trail, Motion Control, and Walking footwear—is a durable, long-wearing compound made by replacing some of the petroleum-derived carbon with sand.

Compression Molded Preform (CMP) process, Brooks’ eco-friendly midsole manufacturing process, reduces manufacturing waste by 50 percent as compared to traditional midsole manufacturing methods.

For printed collateral including brochures, catalogs, P.O.P., and apparel hangtags, Brooks almost exclusively uses paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and printing is done with soy-based inks.

DuPont Company
Maribel Rivera
Maribel.rivera@usa.dupont.com
(302)999-3507

DuPont pioneered a way to produce 1, 3 propanediol or PDO from renewable resources, mainly corn sugar. 1, 3 propanediol is a key ingredient in the production of Sorona polymer.

Substituting renewable resources in the production of Bio-PDO, reduces the use of petrochemicals in the production of Sorona.

DuPont Sorona polymer is manufactured in a continuous polymerization process; as a result, processing problems and waste generation are minimized, leading to increased productivity and efficiency and more consistent quality.

The advantages of transitioning to a bio-based manufacturing process for PDO include a smaller environmental footprint and less energy consumption.

On a pound for pound basis, production of Bio-PDO consumes about 40% less energy than product of its petrochemical-based counterpart. On a pound for pound basis, production of Sorona using Bio-PDO consumes 40% less energy than nylon. On a pound for pound basis, production of Sorona results in 50% less greenhouse gas emissions than petrochemical based nylon.

Ecology and environmental responsibility were central issues when building the New Munich Trade Fair Center, the home of ISPO, where they also provide guidelines for operational policies.

ISPO's exhibit halls feature an 835,000 sq ft. solar roof, still considered the World's largest roof-mounted photovoltaic system, also serving as Europe's solar-energy test site for solar cells and power inverters.

This use of renewable energy at ISPO's home actively avoids the burning of fossil fuel which would cause the release of some 3,300 tons of carbon dioxide.

ISPO and Messe Munich practice Reduce-Reuse-Recycle principles at all levels from food services to the on-site resource-separation plant and massive rainwater receptacles for replenishing the center's lakes.

ISPO actively encourages the use of public transportation by providing entirely free access to Munichs subways, trains and buses for each event's 80,000+ show attendees and exhibitors.

Sterling Rope Company

john@sterlingrope.com
800-788-ROPE

We invite everyone to take part in our Rope Recycling Initiative.  Don’t let old rope sit in your closet or worse, a landfill, Sterling can have it recycled for you!

Simply send us your retired dynamic climbing ropes or nylon slings from any manufacturer and we will take it from there!

We’ve partnered with an efficient recycling expert that repelletizes the nylon so it can be re-made into items like carpet fiber, telephones, coat hangers, children's toys and more!

We encourage reusing rope however; retired rope should never be used for life-safety! Miles of rope is produced every year so reusing it isn’t enough to reduce the environmental impact.

Together we can make a difference. Let’s keep climbers safe and also reuse the petroleum-based nylon for something else. Go to www.sterlingrope.com or e-mail us to find out more.

Timbuk2 Designs, Inc.
Macy Allatt
macy@timbuk2.com
(415)321-6829

Timbuk2 has started to think about the way we manufacture our products in an effort to make this world a healthier, safer and cleaner place. Timbuk2 has removed all PVC from our core messenger bag products as of Spring 2007. We've replaced the vinyl liner with a TPU material, which is just as versatile and durable as vinyl, and better for the environment (vinyl is made from PVC and has negative environmental and health implications during its production and life cycle). Timbuk2 also removed the other PVC components of our bags, such as the essential reflector tabs and tails, to go completely PVC-free.

Timbuk2 is making bags out of Organic Hemp, Organic Cotton and other recycled/found materials including used banners and PET (polyethylene terephthalate), a material made from plastic bottles.

Timbuk2's tradeshow booth is 85% green. It's comprised of recycled steel and aluminum; All of the plywood used to create the walls, tower, counter, desk, riser, crates, etc. are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood, which means they come from well managed and controlled forests; paints and other materials used are made with low VOC (volatile organic compound) which means that the vapors do less harm to the ozone layer.

Timbuk2 continues its efforts to use recycled paper in all of its POP and marketing collateral.

Timbuk2 designed the first completely sustainable, 'eco-efficient' bag in collaboration with William McDonough and the specifications of his Cradle To Cradle philosophy-presented at the 2006 Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED) conference.

Wenger NA will be sending approximately 30,000 watch batteries that were previously discarded annually to a recycler.

Wenger NA will be purchasing electricity from a company that requires all energy suppliers to have renewable energy components.

Wenger’s Green Team recommends and implements programs to minimize its environmental footprint, then monitors progress while encouraging participation and cooperation amongst employees and suppliers.

We maintain a recycle/re-use program on everything imaginable, including: plastic, aluminum, Kevlar, foam, fiberglass, pallets, paper, cardboard, cheese cloth, newspapers, and even ink cartridges.

We maintain an internal solvent recycling program utilizing on-site re-distillation purification.
